چکیده

We theoretically investigate the effect of intermolecular Coulomb interactions on transport through selfassembled molecular monolayers (or other devices based on a large number of nanoscale conductors connected in parallel). Due to the interactions, the current through different molecules become correlated, resulting in distinct features in the nonlinear current-voltage characteristics, as we show by deriving and solving a type of modified master equation, suitable for describing transport through an infinite number of interacting conductors. Furthermore, if some of the molecules fail to bond to both electrodes, charge traps can be induced at high voltages and block transport through neighboring molecules, resulting in negative differential resistance.

Electron tunneling through alkanedithiol self-assembled monolayers in large-area molecular junctions.

The electrical transport through self-assembled monolayers of alkanedithiols was studied in large-area molecular junctions and described by the Simmons model [Simmons JG (1963) J Appl Phys 34:1793-1803 and 2581-2590] for tunneling through a practical barrier, i.e., a rectangular barrier with the image potential included. The strength of the image potential depends on the value of the dielectric...

The information content of electron flow through adsorbed molecular monolayers.

We point to the ability of noncontact measurements of electron transport via self-assembled monolayers to provide chemical, A-resolved information about the underlying molecule. A conceptual framework is presented to model a current flow of soft electrons through a molecular monolayer to a substrate and explore the information content of this and other emerging noncontact measurements. A numeri...

Charge Transport through Oligoarylene Self-assembled Monolayers: Interplay of Molecular Organization, Metal-Molecule Interactions, and Electronic Structure

Organic compounds–either as single molecules or organized in self-assembled monolayers (SAMs)–can act as wires, rectifiers, switches, or even transistors in the development of ultraminiaturized electronics. The prospect of such molecular electronics has led to a steadily growing interest in the characterization of both the electronic and structural features of relevant molecular species bound t...

Electronic transport in self-assembled alkanethiol monolayers

Electron tunneling through self-assembled monolayers of alkanethiols is investigated. Temperature-dependent current– voltage measurements are performed to distinguish between di erent conduction mechanisms. Temperature-independent electron transport is observed, proving direct tunneling as the dominant conduction mechanism of alkanethiols. An exponential dependence of tunneling current on molec...
